The first song that City College student Vincent Barnett learned to play on the piano was “Next Episode” by Dr. Dre. Four years later, Barnett — also known by his DJ persona, SweetVinSteezus — recalls the moment he came face to face with the hip-hop legend outside Roscoe’s House of Chicken and Waffles.
Barnett says he took up the persona of SweetVinSteezus after attending a high school party where a DJ played directly from a prepared setlist.
These encounters, married with drive and a love of the performing arts, are what the 20-year-old child education major says has produced his unpredictable stage persona.
“I like to take two completely different genres … and put them together,” Barnett explains.
As a DJ, the Sacramento native specializes in trap music, a style defined by layered percussion and synthesizer melodies. But Barnett says that his love of music transcends genres and informs his musical aesthetic. As such, he adds, his love of jazz and his familiarity with trap have inspired him to explore ways to blend sounds.
Barnett says that his musical aspirations bloomed after the aforementioned high school party. He says he became irritated by the lack of effort many contemporary DJs seemed to put into their work, and he now bases his style on audience response and creativity.
“I like to be as spontaneous as possible,” says Barnett.
That spontaneity is evident when he tells a story. Springing from his seat to demonstrate his reaction to a situation, he relishes storytelling. This is also indicative of his other major artistic interest: theater.
Barnett has also been involved in the theater arts since high school — a hobby that has now carried over to City College.
“Looking back, [theater] is one of the best things I’ve done with my life,” says Barnett.
Barnett describes at length how theater is a way to express and find himself and the thrill he gets from performing. Theater, he says, makes him feel like he can take over the world.
Currently, Barnett is cast in the City Theatre production of “Pride and Prejudice,” an adaption of the Jane Austen novel of the same name. He is also set to star as Barney Bagnal in a production of “The Silver Tassie,” an anti-war play penned by Sean O’Casey.
But Barnett still finds time onstage for SweetVinSteezus. Currently, he performs on Friday and Saturday nights at Aladdin Café Hookah Bar in Rancho Cordova.
With theater and music, Barnett’s artistic ventures continue to evolve and diversify. He says that he has experimented with improvisational and stand-up comedy, both of which have informed his stage presence.
Barnett’s stage presence is no different from his everyday self, according to Nolan Jennings, Jr., a friend and frequent collaborator.
“He’s a lively character, and he’s charismatic about what he wants to do,” says Jennings. “We vibed musically on a different level.”
Barnett says that his musical interests are as abundant and varied as his inspirations. He lists artists like Coldplay and RL Grime, and he hopes to one day collaborate with Mr. Carmack, Childish Gambino and The Black Keys.
Barnett says one of his goals is to per- form at popular music festivals like TBD Fest, an annual music festival held in the Sacramento area that has featured headlining artists such as Tyler the Creator.
“I want to see the world,” says Barnett. “I want music to take me places.”
