The Los Rios Community College District announced Dec.15 that all fall and winter team sports that had been postponed to the early part of the spring semester have been canceled to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
That includes men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, women’s golf, women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s wrestling, and women’s water polo, according to a spring 2021 athletics update to the City College community.
The update said that no decision has yet been made about whether sports traditionally played in spring will be able to take place, on the Panther website.
“We know that this has been an incredibly difficult time for all of our student-athletes and appreciate how badly everyone wants to return to conditioning, practices, and competition,” the update said. “Unfortunately, the public health conditions in our region and around the state have worsened dramatically in the past several weeks, erasing progress that we had made in combating this virus in the spring and summer.”

Fall and winter sports were to be played in the early part of the spring 2021 semester, and spring sports were to be played in the latter half of the spring 2021 semester.
In the update, City College and Los Rios district leadership said it hoped that teams could resume in-person training once Sacramento County had dropped to the “red” tier on the statewide reopening blueprint.
“The Big 8 Conference, including Sacramento City College, has yet to make a decision about the status of late spring sports and we remain hopeful that the widespread availability of the COVID-19 vaccine will improve conditions to the point where we are able to resume team activities and competition at that time,” according to the update. “Sacramento City College will make a decision about late spring sports prior to the CCCAA’s late February deadline.
