Student Senate President Spencer Slavazza has a message for City College students, even if they’re not on campus:
“The Student Senate is back in order for the spring 2021 semester. Plans are already [underway] for the upcoming weeks to get students and faculty involved.”
Slavazza said that many students are unaware that the Student Senate is still active during campus shutdown, and his goal is to find new methods to increase awareness of how the Senate operates—even remotely.
To that end, Slavazza said the Student Senate will host a community discussion Friday, Feb. 5 12-1 p.m. via Zoom. All members of the City College community are encouraged to join.
“Each student and faculty member at City College has a voice that can and will be heard,” said Slavazza
In his last semester as Student Senate president, Slavazza is determined to gain knowledge from students and faculty and hopes to leave his mark on City College.
According to Slavazza, the Student Senate has begun to develop an online portal that outlines access to multiple campus resources. This centralized hub will provide links to support that students can currently access in other ways through City College’s website by presenting single-site access to free, one-on-one tutoring support via Zoom, online library support with 24/7 chat, financial aid and mental health resources.
He said this resource might be included on the City College website or as a portal through Canvas for quicker access.
In addition to its work on the online portal, the Student Senate will hold student elections this semester. Spring 2021 will be the first semester that elections will not be held in person due to COVID-19. However, plans are still underway for the usual candidate forum, informational meetings and debates.
“Currently there is no date set for the elections,” Slavazza said “They should be held some time in April.”
According to Slavazza, most of the positions within the Student Senate will be vacant after spring 2021. Students can visit the Student Senate page to learn how to get involved.
“Students need to continue to get involved because we are still operating for the students and faculty,” Slavazza said.“I also encourage students to bring their issues to community discussions like the one scheduled for this month.
