Assembly member Kevin McCarty and Chancellor Brian King came to campus Sept. 9 to announce $2.4 million in state funding allocated for a Basic Needs and Veterans Resource Center at City College.
The funds were secured from the 2019–20 California budget and will upgrade the Veterans Resource Center, as well as help veterans with counseling, VA benefits, schoolwork, admissions and more. The funds will also provide basic needs for students, such as programming for food distribution, housing, CalWorks and CalFresh, according to an email by McCarty’s Communications Director Russell Hartley.
City College Student Senate President Kimberly Ramos sat down with McCarty after the announcement to discuss the difficulties that community college students face.
“Community college is unique,” said Ramos. “What students have told me, my friends, my colleagues, is that this is a place where they come when they need basic skills on top of working. When they can’t afford going to UC or CSU, community college is their home.”
