With shows like “Jersey Shore,” “Cake Boss,” “Real Housewives of Jersey” and “Jerseylicious,” eastern swag seems to be taking over America’s airwaves. So much, that MTV’s own “Jersey Shore” broke television ratings with an all-time high of 6.7 million viewers during the season two’s finale. There was something about drunken nights, fist pumps, and unpredictable drama that sparks the interest of an average of 5.8 million viewers each week during the second season of the “Jersey Shore”, according to USA Today.
City College student Taylor Blair finds the show compelling because of how the cast members’ behaviors pale in comparison to her group of friends.
“I started watching Jersey Shore after constantly seeing the previews on MTV,” Blair says. “I think the show is stupid, yet entertaining…it’s fun to see how crazy and different people are from me and my friends.”
Some people, like City College early childhood development student Marisa Monier, watch these Jersey-centric shows to live vicariously through them.
“My friends watch it, so I only watch it with them,” Monier says. “People like drama, and like to fantasize about being as ridiculous as those people, but fear it. So, they watch the show instead.”

Keith Heningburg, a City College history professor, says that the interest of these shows are from the fact that viewers like seeing the real flaws of the characters.
“Americans have an inordinate, prurient, interest in the lives of other folks,” Heningburg says. “These shows are a success because people are intensely interested in how much dirt they can observe.”
As people are watching these shows, they should remember that since it’s television, anything can be staged and offer a false portrayal of these people.
“[The ‘Jersey Shore’] doesn’t paint an accurate picture of what Jersey is really like,” says Blair. “I have family who live there, but they act nothing like that.”
