Panthers drop 2 games below .500 on season
City College baseball lost Game 2 of the three-game series March 19 against the Santa Rosa Bear Cubs 9-6 when it gave up eight runs in the final three innings.
The Panthers brought in relief pitcher Travis Magness in the top of the seventh to try and compliment starting pitcher Zach Smart, but the plan backfired. Head coach Derek Sullivan went through four pitchers in the inning, and the group allowed six runs on seven hits.
“We brought in a left-hander for some left-handed hitter matchups, and it didn’t get the route we wanted it to,” said Sullivan. “Then we went to a couple guys that just weren’t on. We gave up a bunch of hits, and we mixed up some signs and threw the wrong pitch twice, and we paid for it. “
After a shaky first inning, starting pitcher Zach Smart did exceptionally well and tamed the Bear Cubs in the following five innings. He allowed only one run on three hits in the six innings he pitched.
“Our starter had a good game, and he was tiring out a little bit,” said Sullivan. “We wanted to get him out in a plus mode.”
The Panthers struck early in the first inning, scoring five runs on four hits. The scoring run started with a two-run homer to right field by Boston Romero and ended with an Anthony Fellman run off a ground-out RBI from Daniel Golden.
City College went on to score one more in the bottom of the sixth. However, in later innings, the team was inefficient in scoring runs, and appeared very sloppy on defense allowing 2 late-inning fielding errors that turned into runs for Santa Rosa.

“They adjusted,” said Sullivan. “Their guy was better, and then we didn’t do the things we did in the first inning, as far as sticking with an offensive approach and forcing Santa Rosa to do things they weren’t comfortable doing.
“They got away with their plan of attack and we allowed them too. They are good. This is not a situation where this is a bad team we just need to keep our foot on the gas pedal, and I think we took it off and even put it on the brake.”
The Panthers will look to bounce back from the loss when they face the Bear Cubs again for Game 3 of the three game series March 21 in Santa Rosa.
