While students at City College have transitioned to remote learning, the Transfer Center is also conducting virtual workshops for those getting ready to transfer. Workshops will be held over Zoom for the Transfer Agreement Guarantee (TAG/TAP) programs, available to any interested students, according to Abraham Madrigal, Transfer Center coordinator and counselor.
September is considered “UC” month, according to the Transfer Center, which means that students can meet with representatives of universities from all over California, just as they used to do in person. Upcoming events include Transfer Thursdays when students can talk to Madrigal via Zoom.
“For every single Thursday for the rest of the fall semester I will be answering any questions on how to transfer,” said Madrigal, who added that he will conduct weekly Transfer Thursday online sessions from 4–5 p.m. to answer brief questions.
“The big, massive thing that is going on this month is the virtual Transfer Week Fair,” said Madrigal.
Los Rios Community College District Transfer Week will take place via Zoom from Monday, Sept. 21, to Thursday, Sept. 24, from 9 a.m.–4 p.m.
“Traditionally, we have a Transfer Day, but now we are doing a virtual Transfer Week along with our sister colleges,” said Madrigal. “We are expecting over 60 sessions throughout our entire week.”
Every hour of each Transfer Week day will offer different admissions and major presentations. The representatives hosting each workshop will provide information about how to apply, various programs and financial aid. According to the Transfer Center, students must RSVP in advance via email to participate on specific days.
The Transfer Center is also focusing on Black students, Madrigal said, to help them learn about transferring to colleges where they can complete bachelors’ degrees.
“I am really pushing for our African American/Black students to give more awareness about four-year universities,” including historically Black colleges and universities, Madrigal said.
Some of the Transfer Center’s other upcoming events include workshops by the Sacramento State MLK Center Wednesday, Sept. 16, from 11 a.m.–noon, and by UC Davis for African American Student Success Monday, Sept. 28, from noon–1 p.m.
Students can begin to apply to transfer to California State Universities beginning Oct. 1, Madrigal said, and transfer workshops, including Transfer Thursdays, will continue throughout the fall semester.
Madrigal said that when he advises students about transferring, “I would tell [them] to do their research on schools, where they want to transfer to, reach out to the Transfer Center because I guarantee that there will be a representative from that school. Get connected with the Transfer Center, and we will connect you with a resource.”
