The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, an organization that raises awareness about suicide, is holding its 12th annual Out of the Darkness Walk at the State Capitol on Oct. 1.
The walk will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. starting and ending at the west steps of the state capitol after a 3 mile loop.
Ryan Ayers, the Northern-California area director of the AFSP, said the walks provide solidarity.
“It’s an opportunity for people who have been affected to come together,” Ayers said.
Ayers said AFSP was founded in 1987 as a research organization but soon filled the void in the conversation about suicide.

AFSP has been hosting walks since 2004 but Ayers said a change in momentum in the last three to five years has occurred.
Having lost a girlfriend to suicide, Ayers said he knows how important a solid support group is in handling situations like the one he went through. Although, he adds others aren’t as lucky as he was.
Ayers said events like this force stories to come out and make it possible for other people to notice and take action.
AFSP raises awareness, funds scientific research and provides resources and aid to those affected by suicide. Online registration for the event ends on Sept. 30 at noon, however there will be in-person check-in at the event.
