If you find yourself driving on Broadway, craving Mexican food, you would be wise to avoid all the other options, and find your way to Taqueria Maya’s.
The restaurant may look more like a ski rental shop with its pyramid shape and sharply pitched bright red roof, but I assure you, the best tacos in town are created at Maya’s.
The menu is huge, featuring classic favorites like breakfast plates, chile rellenos, tortas and enchiladas, They also have a salsa bar that features exotic variations of salsa not commonly found at other area restaurants, like Oscar’s on Freeport Boulevard. However, the real magic is in the crispy tacos.
For variety, I chose one beef, one fish and one chicken taco. For me, three was the perfect amount, and the tacos were so delicious that I left completely satisfied. The tacos are garnished with avocado, radishes and creme sauce, and the shredded beef and chicken are seasoned and cooked to perfection.
The fish taco is a thing of beauty. It is seasoned and grilled, not boiled or breaded and deep-fried like the many I have tried around Sacramento. The best part is the price: a bargain at $2.99. Other eateries would charge a much higher price.
Avoiding fast food while eating on a budget is possible with places like Maya’s. I left completely satisfied for under $10, and will be going back very soon.
Maya’s has a “family-run” restaurant feel, and orders tend to take a while. The wait is always worth it, but if you have limited time, this may not be the best option.
To top it all off, Maya’s also has a happy hour that will surely satisfy your Taco Tuesday craving. They offer $1 street tacos when you buy a draft beer (or regular drink if you’re under 21) for $1.99 Monday through Thursday, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Taqueria Maya’s is located at 2700 Broadway, and open from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. seven days a week.
