Feb. 9: Panthers can’t hold on, lose in 9th inning
City College lost to the Chabot College Gladiators 7-6 in the final game of a three-game series Feb. 9 at Union Stadium.
With two outs, two runners in scoring position and the game tied 6-6, Panthers’ closing pitcher Brandon Nunn threw a wild pitch. The pitch got away from catcher Austin Spainhour and allowed Gladiators’ Brett Binning to score the go-ahead run.
“We made some mistakes in some poor times,” said City College head coach Derek Sullivan. “We didn’t respond well to taking a big lead early — not a big lead, but a lead — and we basically gave it right back.”
The Gladiators got on the board first in the first inning after Zack Crittenden scored on fielding error by Panthers left fielder Alex Muzzi.
The Panthers didn’t take long to strike back and scored in the bottom half of the inning. While third baseman Tyler Houlihan got in a pickle when he attempted to steal second base, Muzzi stole home and tied the game.
In the second inning, the Panthers scored four runs on three hits to take an early 5-1 lead. The first run came off of a RBI single from Spainhour. Designated hitter Brian Ingram scored next after a fielding error by Gladiators’ right fielder Michael Echavia. Spainhour and Daniel Golden scored later in the inning on a Muzzi two-RBI double.
Chabot knocked the lead down in the third and scored three runs on four hits. With two runners in scoring position, Binning came to the plate and hit a two-RBI single. Binning later scored in the inning on a Daniel Whitney RBI single.
After allowing four runs in the first five innings, Panthers’ starting pitcher Zach Smart gave up two more in the sixth and was subsequently pulled for Travis Magness.
“Smart was really good at times, but he had a tough inning where he just didn’t come out right,” said Sullivan. “We had a long inning where we scored a few, and he came out and he wasn’t sharp.”
In the top of the ninth inning, Panthers’ closing pitcher Brandon Nunn took the mound. After walking the first batter and getting the second batter out, things got sloppy.
Gladiator’s J.D. McDonnell hit the ball down the first base line, but first baseman Brandon Langan couldn’t hold on to the ball and McDonnell reached on fielders error. The error subsequently allowed Binning to advance to third base. Two batters later, Binning scored the go-ahead run.
The Panthers got the tying run on base from a fielding error, but didn’t score in the bottom half of the ninth inning.
For the Panthers, Spainhour (1) and Muzzi (3) had RBI’s on the day and both scored runs.
The Panthers’ Nunn (1-1) was credited with the loss, and the Gladiators’ Adam Kimmel (1-0) was awarded the win.
“Our guys are getting better competing with their at bats and for pitches, but just our time between pitches is where we need to improve our focus,” said Sullivan. “Not that the dugout is out of control, but just putting ourselves in better positions to control the things that we can control.”
The Panthers (2-3) will face Cañada College in a two-game series at Union Stadium Feb. 13 and 14.

Feb. 5: Two 6-run innings put Panthers over Gladiators
City College defeated the Chabot College Gladiators 13-7 in Game 2 of a three-game series Feb. 5 at Union Stadium.
The game seemed to get away from the Gladiators in the bottom half of the fourth inning after the Panthers scored six runs — three were unearned runs, coming after batters were hit by the pitch in a bases loaded situation.
“That [fourth] inning, we took advantage of some opportunities that they gave us — a lot of hit by pitches,” said City College head coach Derek Sullivan, “but it’s one of those good things where we were in a position to take advantage of what they gave us.”
The Gladiators struck first in the game, scoring three runs in the first two innings. The first score came after Gladiators’ designated hitter Michael Echavia singled to right field, which allowed shortstop Ian Dawkins to score from second base. The other two runs came in the second inning on a two RBI double from Dawkins.
Though the Panthers were down 3-0 after the in the top half of the second, they rallied back with six runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.
After advancing to third base on a fielding error, Panthers’ designated hitter Riley Simmons scored after a sacrifice fly by Auston Chastain. Down two outs in the inning, the Panthers began to take advantage of the lackluster pitching performance by Chabot’s starter Kyle Narahara and scored four more runs before Narahara was pulled for Adam Kimmel.
The Panthers scored one more run in the inning off of Kimmel and took a 6-3 lead going into the top of the third inning.
“We put together some good at-bats, had some really good swings and we got a bunch of hits in a row,” said Sullivan. “So that was outstanding and fun to watch. It was a good response to going down three runs.”
The Gladiators went on to score four more runs in the game after the fifth inning, but it wasn’t enough to take down the 10-point lead the Panthers held.
After allowing three runs in the first two innings, Panthers’ starting pitcher Ben Ritchey threw three shut out innings before allowing one run in the sixth. Sullivan then pulled Ritchey for Travis Magness.
Magness went on to pitch 1 1/3 innings and allowed one run in the seventh. Gabriel Meza took the mound in the eighth and faced only three batters before getting three outs to end the top half of the inning.
Things got a bit sloppy in the top of the ninth when Austin Paisar came to the mound to close the game out. The Gladiators scored two runs in the inning before Paisar was pulled for closing pitcher Brandon Nunn. Nunn would face only four batters before getting all three outs, ending the game.
For the Panthers, Tyler Houlihan (1), Nolan Ryan (1), Matt Poulin (1), Boston Romero (2), Brandon Langan (2), Drake Atlee (2), Riley Simmons (2) and Auston Chastain (3) had RBIs on the day.
Panthers’ Ritchey (1-0) was awarded the win, and the Gladiators’ Narahara (0-1) was credited with the loss.
“I felt it could’ve been better, but I didn’t have my normal stuff,” said Ritchey on his performance. “I just had to really bear down and compete. I had a pretty bad cold, but nothing was going to stop me from getting out there and doing my thing.”
The Panthers and Gladiators will face off again Feb. 9 in the final game of the three-game series.
