City College men’s basketball defeated Big 8 Conference rival Delta College in a close 71-66 victory Jan. 23, breaking a six-game losing streak.
After trailing 27-24 at halftime, the Panthers gained control for the majority of the second half, outscoring Delta 47-42.
“At halftime, I told [the team] that this wasn’t a game of adjustments,” said City College head coach Andrew Jones. “We were doing what we wanted to do defensively, but we turned the ball over too much in the first half and we missed too many free throws and layups. As long as our offense and defense were doing what they were doing, I told them, we could win.”
Delta’s leading scorer Dwayne Lee — who scored 23 points in the Jan. 23 game — was the main focus late in the game. He was five of nine on the night from the 3-point line, and the ball went to him often in the last minute.
Panthers’ guard Michael Wiggins was assigned to Lee in the final minutes and shut him down.
