After bungling defensive performances in back to back losses to Modesto Junior College and Cosumnes River College, City College played its best defensive game of the season Jan. 17 for a 52-48 win against the Santa Rosa Junior College Bear Cubs.
As the first-place team in the Big 8 the Santa Rosa Bear Cubs were allowed just 42 points by City College which also allowed only one Bear Cub into double digits scoring (Matthew Hayes, 10 points).
“We defended a team that usually scores really well, and we did a really good job on them,” said Panthers Head Coach Andrew Jones. “By and large their shots were contested.”
Panthers leading scorer Bobby Barnes had an off night, putting up just 4 points, but sophomore guard Antwoine Davis lead the Panthers with 14 points (12 in the second half) to go along with 10 rebounds, two steals and one block. Barns stood out on both sides of the ball in the second half after sitting out most of the first because of early foul trouble, picking up two in the first 4:40.
“He’s our best overall player,” said Jones of the sophomore guard.
The Panthers got out to good start on offense draining six 3-pointers in the first half, including two from freshman guard Derek Rhodes and limited the Bear Cubs offense down low forcing them to settle for longer shots. The Panthers took a 3-point lead into the locker room at half.

The game stayed close through the second half as the first-place Bear Cubs continued to pressure the Panthers on both ends of floor. The Panthers showed maturity in staying composed as the pressure mounted down the stretch. Tightening down on defense the Panthers allowed the Bear Cubs just 8 points in the final eight minutes.
“We were much more focused [in the second half] than we were last game,” said Jones.
With 3:40 remaining Davis was fouled on a drive to the basket and went to the line where he made both free throws to give the Panthers a 3-point lead at 46-43. Davis made five free throws in the last five minutes of play (three of them in the last 30 seconds.
The Bear Cubs had one final chance to even the score when, with two seconds remaining and trailing by 3 points, freshmen guard Devone Oliver had a good look at a three. Oliver missed and Davis secured the rebound. He was subsequently fouled intentionally by the Bear Cubs and made one of two from the free throw strike with 1.8 seconds remaining making it a 4-point game and sealing the win for City College at 52-48 as they improved to 2-2 in conference play.
