The May 8 SAC meeting will be the last of the semester, with the funding policy vote capping off a semester-long controversy that initially heated up Feb. 6 when the SAC voted 14-3 to allocate an amount not to exceed $17,000 in non-matching funds from Student Representation Funds to Phi Theta Kappa—a City College chapter of the national honors society—to send up to 12 eligible students to attend the 2019 International PTK Convention in Orlando, Florida.
Six SAC board members are members of PTK, four of whom hold executive positions. The SAC later reassessed the Feb. 6 decision and on Feb. 20, voted to allocate up to $5,000 in matching funds to PTK. The SAC has since created an ad hoc committee to discuss and rewrite the policy regarding matching funds, as well as address transparency and accountability.
