The City College women’s basketball team didn’t quite end the season the way it had hoped, but the Panthers were still able to clinch a playoff spot, and will now play a second round at home against the Chabot College Gladiators March 1.
The Panthers ended the season 19–10 and 10–6 in the Big 8 Conference, giving them a fourth-place finish. The record and standing was the team’s best since the 2015–2016 season when they finished 22–9, 9–5.
City College also defeated the Gladiators twice that season, including a playoff game. Panthers head Coach Julia Allender said her goal in the game is for her players to limit points in the paint and offensive rebounds.
“Clearly we haven’t prepared correctly and intense enough to match teams that play (at a high level) like that,” Allender said after the game against San Joaquin Delta Feb. 22.
Due to a strong start to the season, the Panthers were never in any danger of missing the playoffs, but the team stumbled down the stretch, finishing 1–3 in its final four games. Two of those losses came at the hands of second-place San Joaquin Delta (on Sophomore Night) and Big 8 Conference Champions Diablo Valley College.
In the last game against the Delta Mustangs, the Panthers lost 82–71, marking the fifth time this season the team has given up 80 points or more, dropping them to 0–5 in those games. The team gave up 46 rebounds and turned the ball over 21 times.

“They were extremely physical and extremely intense, and we did not match it,” said Allender on the team’s final regular season game. “They outplayed us, they were tougher than us, and they destroyed us on the blocks, and they for sure earned that win tonight.”
Madison Coleman finished the game with a team-high 26 points and 16 rebounds. Coleman and teammate Brandy Huffhines made the All-Conference team in the Big 8. Coleman was also second team All-State, and Huffhines was third team All-State.
Coleman was City College female Athlete of the Month in December. She averaged nearly 15 points to go along with 11 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals. In February she scored 23 points per game and scored 30 in back-to-back games and finished the season with 10 double-doubles.
Allender is 3–0 in home playoff games during her tenure at City College, ending a 14-year playoff drought in women’s basketball in her second season as head coach. This season every athlete on her roster will be playing in the playoffs for the first time.
“I’m very excited,” said Panthers sophomore guard Madison Coleman. “It’s going to be a big game for us, it’ll show us how we handle the pressure when everything is on the line.”
Freshman guard Johanna Lauderdale said it’s time for the team to turn up the intensity as they prepare for their playoff game. “We have to keep it going and show what Sac City basketball is all about.”
