City College administrators, faculty and classified staff gathered in the Performing Arts Center and invited the campus community to envision a more student-centered environment at the fall convocation Friday, Aug. 23.

Business Professor Debra Crumpton, who facilitated the new faculty orientation and sessions, began the introduction of the newly hired employees with a talk titled “The environment we create.”

When you meet the new faculty academy [members] today, you’re going to be amazed,” said Crumpton, addressing the audience.

Crumpton told the audience that she recalled a conversation with history Professor Sherri Patton. “She [Sherri] said, ‘You know, I’ve been here for 20 years, and for the first time, I am looking at a cohort of colleagues that look like the students we serve.’”

Academic Senate President Gayle Pitman described seeing the new faculty cohort all gathered in one room as “an emotional experience.”

Crumpton asked those responsible for selecting the new cohort — all faculty, staff and students who participated in hiring committees — to stand and be recognized.

“You’ve changed the future of City College forever. And you’ve changed it for the better,” said Crumpton, addressing those standing.

The convocation also featured short presentations by students who shared their visions for “The Ideal City College,” each talk followed by an introduction to the newly hired classified professionals, to new faculty and then to new managers.

“The only way we can be sure that we are living up to this highest ideal is to hear from the students themselves,” said Crumpton.

President Michael Gutierrez, who recently suffered major injuries in an auto collision Aug. 12, was not able to attend convocation.

“I’ve been thinking about you a tremendous amount. I’ve been thinking about how you’ve committed your life and your career to our students and to our community, to help our students learn and to help them fulfill their goals,” he said.

“And that inspires me to get myself out of bed, to know that what I do in my career and my life has meaning. I can’t wait to see all of you, and I very much look forward to seeing you very soon. Have a great start to the semester.”
