With about a month left in each respective season, City College athletics looks to make a run for playoff positioning. Here’s a quick recap of each sport for the month of March.
SOFTBALL
The Panthers finished with a 7-4 record in the month of March, including an 11-3 victory March 20 at Folsom Lake College, which gave coach Tim Kiernan his 1,000th career softball win at City College.
“It’s pretty legendary,” said outfielder Mackenzie Duval after Kiernan’s milestone achievement.
Elizabeth Caffero leads the Big 8 Conference in all three triple crown categories with a .473 batting average, 10 home runs and 37 RBIs.
Pitcher Danielle Reyes has gone 13-6 with a 1.59 earned run average and a conference-leading 139 strikeouts, including 20 in a March 17 10-inning win over San Joaquin Delta.
City has 10 games remaining in April and the regular season. At 7-7 in the Big 8 Conference (17-13 overall), City has some ground to make up to reach the postseason as they are four games outside of the Top 4 in the conference.
BASEBALL
The City baseball team went 9-3 in March, including a stretch of three consecutive home games in which they had extra-inning walk-off wins March 17, 20 and 24. City is 4-0 in extra-inning games this season.
“We may own the 10th for right now,” joked head coach Derek Sullivan after Kody Gardner became the latest walk-off hero March 24 against Cosumnes River College.
While tied for second in a crowded Big 8 Conference, the Panthers jumped five spots to sixth place in the California Community College Sports Information Association state baseball rankings. The team is 21-7 heading into April.
The team’s 2.54 earned run average ranks second in California. City has four starters in the Top 10 in the Big 8 in ERA while Adam Erickson leads the conference with five saves out of the bullpen.
City begins a three-game set with American River College this week.
WOMEN’S TRACK
The City women competed at CSU Stanislaus, UC Davis, Sacramento State and San Francisco State over the four weekends in March.
The team of Kiara Flenoid, Ayanna Wade, Jasmine Loyola and Lauren Smith took first in the 1,600-meter sprint medley at the S.F. State Distance Carnival March 30. In doing so, the relay team claimed the top spot in the Big 8 Conference.
The Big 8 is littered with Panthers in the Top 5. Daryia Greene holds the top spot in the 400 at 56.55 seconds and second overall in the 800 at 2:21.51. Flenoid, Loyola, Sianna Willis and Lauren Smith each rank in the Top 10 in three different events.

Alyssa McAlister ranks second and third in both the 100- and 400-meter hurdles, respectively. The Panthers have two strong throwers in Riley Cannon and Janessa Moses. Cannon is inside the Top 5 in the shot put, discus and hammer throws while Moses is second overall in the shot put.
MEN’S TRACK
Trevor Holt (hammer) and Kamil Jones (400 hurdles) are the only two individuals from the men’s team to take home first place finishes. Holt currently ranks second in the Big 8 hammer standings while treading inside the Top 10 in the discus and shot put as well.
Jones’ win at the Wildcat Invitational March 10 at Chico State places him third overall in the Big 8 in the 400 hurdles. He also ranks second by less than a quarter of a second in the 200-meter dash.
Lawerence Evans and Torrey White each hold Top 10 spots in sprinting events while the relay team of White, Jones, Aries Loeza and Daryl Moppins is less than a second off of the top pace in the conference.
Both track teams are gearing up for the Jamie Nieto Invitational, the first home meet for the Panthers April 6.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
The Panthers have been paced by Julia Ng, who has been a consistent point-scorer for City in the pool. After finishing third in both the 50 and 100 freestyles at the Las Positas Hawks Invite, Ng was named Discipline Champion for earning the highest combined placings for both sprint events. She earned 58 points in four events for the Panthers.
Grace Tan is inching closer to placing in the Top 5 in the 100 backstroke in her past two meets. Brianna Magobet finished second in the 50 fly at the Hawks Invite March 24 with a time of 28.84 seconds.
The next test for the swimmers will be at the American River College Sprints April 6.
MEN’S SWIMMING
The men’s swimming team took 18th overall at the March 9 Cuesta Invitational and 12th at the Hawks Invite at Las Positas College.
Matt Lemire was named Discipline Champion in men’s action at the Hawks Invite March 24 for his performance in the Distance Freestyle. Lemire took second in both the 500 (4:53.03) and the 1650 (16:56.95).
Matt Frediani racked up 28 points for his team over four events at the Hawks Invite, including a seventh-place finish in the 200 breaststroke at 2:26.02.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
David Griffin’s squad earned a pair of wins in March. City sits at 3-5 overall with the Big 8 tournament beginning this week.
Denise Mosciatti leads the team with four singles victories while Jordyn Kennedy and Aide Preciado each have three for the Panthers.
Mosciatti and Raquel Palma are 3-5 as a doubles pair, Kennedy and Preciado are 3-3, and Steffi Campos and Liliya Guslistova maintain a 2-6 record.
City makes up two matches this week. The Panthers host Reedley College Tuesday before traveling to Fresno City College Wednesday. The Big 8 Tournament is scheduled to begin Thursday in Fresno.
