As the March 6 City College scholarship deadline nears, Regional Director of Philanthropy Victoria Austin and Donor Relation Specialist Rebecca Bain advise students to submit applications to compete for scholarships that average between $200–$500 or more.
“There’s tons of scholarships out there for students, and it’s money they don’t ever have to pay back. Who doesn’t like free money, right?” said Austin.
The Office of Philanthropy located in Rodda Hall North 222 is full of information for students wanting to know more about scholarships and get more financial help.
“Many scholarships have different eligibility [requirements], but the minimum that we tell students is if you at least took six units this semester and six units last semester here and [you] are in good standing, you can apply for a scholarship,” Austin said.
Also known as College Advancement, the philanthropy office “consists of interdependent programs and activities that seek to secure resources essential to the achievement of SCC’s mission and vision,” according to the City College website.

Only for some special scholarships will students need to write essays, says Austin, though every student needs a brief letter of recommendation from a professor, supervisor or counselor.
City College also gets help from community members and college staff when it comes to scholarships, according to Bain, the donor relation specialist.
“We have donors and employee donors who give every year to make scholarships happen,” says Bain. “People who work here at City College, parents, former students and people from the community. Our donations come from a variety of different community members connected to the campus in a variety of ways. When I talk to donors about scholarships, they are so excited they get to help students.”
Though Austin acknowledged that there is competition for scholarship money throughout the Los Rios district, she encouraged all students to complete the application by the March 6 deadline.
