At the 39th annual Sacramento City College alumni scrimmage, current Panther wrestlers gathered at City College Sept. 1 to compete and share their love for the sport of wrestling.
While the meet was a scrimmage and official scores were not kept, there were still valuable takeaways.
“There’s two main things from this program,” said Coach David Pacheco. “One is to get our alumni here to see what our team for this year looks like. But the second is to give our current team a chance to wrestle against people with experience. So it gives them a chance to get out there in front of a crowd, against experienced wrestlers, shortened match, but it’s a great way to get that first one under your belt before you get to the real matches.”
For Pacheco, the alumni scrimmage is also a trip down memory lane. Pacheco, a Sacramento City College wrestling alumnus himself (1976-77), started the alumni scrimmage in 1980 and has kept it going ever since.
“About 1980 I got out of college, I went to school here, and I came back and I told my coach, ‘When I was in Idaho, they had these alumni matches—they were fantastic, a lot of people would get involved, la da da—we gotta do it.’ He goes, ‘OK, you run it.’”
Pacheco laughed as he continued, “So I’ve been running this since 1980 before I started coaching here. And I kept it going. We’ve got great people, and the support’s good. I try to get people from the school to come and watch, too.”
President Michael Gutierrez came to the scrimmage last year and again was among the many spectators and alumni who filled the South Gym this year.

Sacramento City College alumnus Dylan Forzani, who now fights professionally in MMA for Team Alpha Male, reflected on what the alumni scrimmage means to him.
“As a student it was just an awesome opportunity to come out and wrestle in front of everyone here, and to get a chance to see what the team is looking like, and what the old guys represent. And now, it’s just fun—honestly, it’s cool to see everybody here. A lot of these guys I haven’t seen in years, so that’s awesome. I think that’s the biggest thing.”
Forzani scrimmaged with sophomore Abel Garcia, who said the event was about more than just seeing how the team is stacking up this year.
“I like (the alumni scrimmage) because it brings together wrestlers from past Sac City teams, and we meet and all wrestle, we share techniques, and we basically rejoice in the love of the sport,” said Garcia.
Garcia finished second in state last year and said he feels comfortable starting the season next week at the Bakersfield Duals.
“I feel confident participating on the team, wrestling. So I’m looking forward to it,” said Garcia.
The Panthers will have their first match of the season at the Bakersfield Duals Saturday, Sept. 8.
