Smoking is now prohibited on all Los Rios campuses, including parking lots and parking structures.

The ban also includes smokeless tobacco, vaping products and marijuana.

Students are required to leave campus if they wish to smoke. Many venture to William Land Park or nearby neighborhoods and businesses, clearing the air for many non-smoking students.

The ban started with City College nurse Wendy Gomez.

“I personally have been working on creating a healthier environment for our students by limiting or eliminating tobacco on our campus for the last eight years,” Gomez said.

Gomez added, “For the health of people who are exposed to secondhand smoke, that’s the primary reason.  When we had designated smoking areas, we could not contain that secondhand smoke, it was more concentrated.”

Gomez received help from a sub-committee of the Campus Safety Committee. They are a committee that promotes campus safety, security, and emergency preparedness. She also received help from Breathe California, an organization that assists college campuses to become smoke-free.

“We’re doing people a disservice by letting them smoke here, and developing an addictive problem they’re going to have a hard time to get rid of later,” Gomez said.

Communications Public Information Officer Rick Brewer said, “it aligns us with pretty much every college around. We have looked at this from a college standpoint.”

“It was a long process actually, before I got here. I’ve been here for two years, but before I got here several people were on a committee to discuss the possibility of going smokeless here on campus,” Brewer said.

Faculty did not make the decision alone, students were involved as well. Surveys were sent out to students and staff.

Since January, emails have been sent out to students and signs have been posted around campus to be smoke-free.

Cosmetology student Tanner Comstock received emails notifying him of the new changes.

“I took the survey last semester, towards the beginning of last semester,” Comstock said.

However, while some of the students had been notified about the the new policies through their student Gmail account, they were not given the opportunity to take a survey regarding the decision.

Cosmetology student Morgan Bartoe said, “As far as the survey went, I feel like the people who do smoke weren’t necessarily part of the survey.”

Bartoe added, “I know I wasn’t, and those are the people I’ve talked to about it.”

Smoking is allowed in private vehicles.
