Through the looking glass: A yellow dress, a dog and a magician

Sitting in third row of the Little Theatre Auditorium 6, I am surrounded by giggling children waiting with anticipation to see their princess, Beauty. “Beauty and The Beast” is what I am waiting paitently to see.

But first the show opens with a magician doing tricks for the children. A quirky man with glasses with a flame shirt is blowing up balloons and making jokes interacting with the children. A classic idea to keep the little ones entertained while the cast gets ready to make their entrance.

Then, Doug Lawson, the director of the show comes on stage and explains to the audience how the play will not begin without ample applause for the piano player to begin on stage right, which seemed a tad ridiculous to me, because children have very little patience as it is, so why make them wait longer? Not a smart move in my opinion.

Finally children and parents begin to ignite the room with cheer and the curtain opens to a butler, no, no wait, a bunny, or a bunny butler named Bergie played by well known City College actor/student, Steve Ibarra. Ibarra is great at bringing the children in with his silly vocals and high energy.

Next up we have a mouse played by Breanna K. Reilly, another butler, yet again Reilly fails to please me with her tiny voice and small stage presence. Julian Sandoval plays an animal gardener. Sandoval’s comedic timing is impressive, but his accent went in and out. The three animal characters are great at playing off of eachother’s energy, but could have shown a bit more enthusiasm on their faces.

Beauty’s father played by Jacob Vuksinich does an impressive job of playing the elderly father when he is most likely in his early twenty’s. Vuksinich’s stage presences keeps the children locked in and he is to me, one of the star’s of the show.

Beauty played by Megan O’Laughlin has a beautiful smile and superb facial expressions, along with vast body movement on stage. Unfortunately, the audience member’s mostly see her reactions through her face and she is upstaged by Beast.

And last off we have the dog, Beast, played by the one and only Anthony M. Person. Like his other character in “A Flea in Her Ear,” he is loud and runs around on stage barking like crazy. With his impressive vocals and sincere romantic facial expressions, Person steals the show.

Although I did not understand the entire play, this show is fast and fun and will keep the little ones entertained on their toes the entire time. “Beauty and The Beast” runs on Saturday and Sundays at 1 p.m. through March 28.
