City College President Michael Gutierrez announced Tuesday that he is leaving for a new job at Hartnell College in Salinas.
In an email to staff, Gutierrez said the Hartnell Community College District Governing Board finalized its decision to select Gutierrez as president of Hartnell. He said he will be reporting to the college on July 1.
Gutierrez has been president of City College since July 2017 and has worked “to overcome hate speech, worked on guided pathways, and developed city ways, with a laser-like focus on student success and closing the equity gaps,” according to his email.
He said, “It is not easy balancing a public interview process, while also doing the work you enjoy at your home college.”
He later added, “I will also be forever grateful for the love and support of my family and me after the gruesome car wreck in August of 2019. I am still humbled by all the acts of kindness by the college community.”
