Missing City College student Emma Roark has been found dead near the American River in Rancho Cordova.
Investigators have declared her death a homicide while awaiting an autopsy from the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office to determine the cause of death, according to a news release posted on Facebook by the Rancho Cordova Police Department on Tuesday, Feb. 1.
“Emma had been taking classes to complete her general education with a goal to transfer to a CSU before she was sadly taken too soon,” said City College President Michael Gutierrez in an email to staff Friday, Feb. 4. “Her loss will be felt across our campus community and we encourage everyone to take the time today to remember Emma and celebrate her life. Our hearts are with her family, friends, and our entire campus community during this time of grief.”
A search for the 20-year-old woman began after Roark’s parents reported her missing Thursday, Jan. 27. The search involved the combined efforts from the Rancho Cordova Police Department, Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, park rangers, drones, and search and rescue crews. No suspects have been named at this time.

Her family had set up a Go Fund Me page when Roark was still considered missing, which has now raised more than $17,000.
In his statement to staff, Gutierrez said that City College’s “counseling services are available 24/7 through [the] Employee Assistance Program.”
