City College will host an afternoon curbside commencement for graduates Wednesday, May 19.
The ceremony, which will follow social distancing and mask guidelines, is open to students graduating in the summer 2019, fall 2019, spring 2020, summer 2020, fall 2020 or spring 2021 semesters who have applied to graduate, according to City College’s commencement webpage. Graduates must RSVP by May 1 to attend the event.
The curbside commencement will run from 2–6 p.m. in the north parking lot (north of the parking garage), according to Kaitlyn Collignon, City College’s public information officer.
“Students will enter on Panther Parkway [by Hughes Stadium],” she said. “That’s going to be our only point of entrance for people to enter.”
To keep vehicles moving along the route, participants will sign up for a 30-minute time slot when they register, according to Collignon.
“As far as everything happening along the path, we’re trying to make it as festive as possible,” she said. “We’ll have a DJ who’s coming out and doing music for us.”
Faculty and staff will be present to cheer on graduates as they drive through the route, but the commencement webpage notes that attendees must remain in their cars and that faculty and staff members will be practicing social distancing from the vehicles.
“Diploma covers are going to be handed out, too,” Collignon said. “That’s a traditional thing for on-ground graduations and a lot of people get excited for that. Our president will be handing those out at the end.”
Graduates are welcome (but not required) to wear their cap and gown (available for purchase from Jostens, the College Store’s limited contact window or special order) for the ceremony, according to the site’s FAQs.
The webpage also notes that participants are encouraged to decorate their vehicles, if they wish. There is a limit of one vehicle per graduate, however.
