Amaya Torres, who has worked as a staff writer for the Express for two semesters, will serve as the Features Editor of City College’s online news site for spring 2021.
Torres joined the Express fall 2019, yet became discouraged with one of the articles she was assigned and dropped the class halfway through the semester—but the writing itch didn’t leave her.
“I couldn’t stop thinking about the Express. I wanted to write,” she said. “That’s always what I wanted to do. I came back the next semester, and I was determined.”
Her resolve ignited, Torres set out to once again mobilize her lifelong dreams of writing professionally and develop her skills by working for the Express.
Indeed, Torres acknowledges her time on the Express as the reason for much of her growth as a writer and professional.
“The Express helped with professionalism,” she said. “I’ve gotten a lot of experience in my field.”
Torres also credits Jan Haag, words adviser for The Express, with helping her grow as a writer.
