On Sunday, August 2, 2020, protesters gathered to march at an event called No State Execution by COVID-19. The protest was organized by No Justice Under Capitalism and We Are Their Voices and started at the Larkspur Ferry Terminal. Attendees marched from there to the West Gate of San Quentin Prison in San Quentin, California.
According to the CDCR, “To reduce crowding and promote better physical distancing, San Quentin State Prison’s inmate population has been reduced from 4,051 in March to 3,326 on July 22.” According to the CDCR COVID-19 tracking, there have been 2,184 total confirmed cases with 69 new cases in the last 14 days and 19 deaths.
Protesters are asking Gov. Newsom and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation that prisoners are released and for the prisons to have better conditions during COVID-19.
