Sacramento City College will offer free tax preparation Thursday, Feb. 22, and Friday, Feb. 23, from 9 a.m.–3 p.m. in the Learning Resource Center Room 141.
“First time here at Sacramento City and we’re excited, we want to be a site now for VITA,” says Kim Handy, City College business professor.
VITA is the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, which offers free tax help to those who make up to $54,000 a year. VITA has various locations, but this will be the first time at City College.
“Often our students are due a refund, and they are not getting the money that is owed back to them,” says Handy, who will be at the event helping students get their taxes done. Students need to bring their picture ID—a student ID qualifies—Social Security card or ITIN card, as well as all tax documents, such as W-2s and all health insurance forms. April 15 is the deadline to file taxes.
Tax experts say the sooner a student files, the sooner they can receive their tax return.
“A lot of them just don’t understand how taxes work, and this gives them exposure to the tax process,” says Handy, who encourages all students to come to the event.
“We’re going to take care of it for you. We’re going to help educate you, and see if we can’t get you some money back,” says Handy.
