The Express newspaper accumulated 10 awards on Oct. 15 at the Journalism Association of Community College 2016 NorCal conference.
The awards received were for works published online and in print during the 2015-2016 academic year. The print and online Express publications are advised by journalism professors Dianne Heimer and Randy Allen. During the awards period, the print Express was advised by journalism department chair Jan Haag and adjunct journalism professor Rachel Leibrock, as well as by design adviser Marcy Wacker.
“We are very proud of our journalism, photography and design students who created the online and print newspapers that won the two general excellence awards,” said Jan Haag, journalism department chair.
“The students put a lot of hard work into the papers, and their dedication to their task shows.”
The student publication received top awards for general excellence for online and print publication. An award in general excellence signifies a news publication is doing everything it should to qualify as an excellent news source for its campus.
The Express and saccityexpress.com also took home the first-place award for best sports feature photo by Kristopher Hooks, former editor-in-chief.
A third-place writing and reporting award was given to a sports game story in the Express. Honorable mentions included a non-profile feature story, news story and opinion story.
A third-place design award for front-page layout and illustration was won by Wacker’s graphic communication class.
Michele Lee, Express design adviser and recipient of the third place Front Page Layout award said, “It’s really cool that there’s an association that gives us the opportunity to showcase our work and compete amongst many other junior colleges and actually win.”
JACC’s NorCal conference was held at Los Medanos Community College in Pittsburg, California. Northern California community colleges that publish campus newspapers attend and compete at the annual event.
