What started out as another LRC monthly display ended up drawing hundreds of students who were interested in giving their opinions on issues in the November elections.
Librarian Judy Howe, who has worked at City College for 14 years, created four standing bulletin boards on the second floor of the library. Some boards were informational, like one on state propositions.
Some boards were interactive, and students could post their opinions. One included questions about real issues, such as: “What do you think is the most important issue today?” Categories like environment, immigration and economy were listed. Colored response notes from students matched the color of the category, and side by side, created a rainbow of colored rows.
“There are a lot of comments, and I’m not taking any of them down unless they’re really bad,” says Howe, who calls the displays “moveable walls.” “And I have yet to take one down. It has really been an exchange of ideas and thoughts.”
Another board presented an imaginary issue: “What if your favorite literary character ran for president? Who would you vote for?” One choice was Hermione Granger from the “Harry Potter” series.
“They seem to be having fun between the important issues and the literary fictional character election,” Howe says. “There’s been a lot of interest with the students.”
