An independent journalist who covers the Israeli-Palestinian conflict shared her philosophy Oct. 21 on reporting.

“I’m not an objective journalist,” said Charlotte Silver, who has contributed to Al Jazeera English and the Electronic Intifada.

Silver told students in journalism professor Dianne Heimer’s class that she believes in standing up to power for the powerless. She told stories about how the lives of Palestinians have been affected by the Gaza bombings by Israeli military.

Silver captured the aftermath of the Gaza conflict and the 100,000 homes that were destroyed. The presentation featured photos and stories of the surviving from families that were left homeless and injured. Silver interviewed several families about the attack they faced.

Silver said Palestine has the highest population of journalists in the world because of the ongoing violence between Israel and Palestine.

“I became a journalist by accident, when I graduated college I wanted to go to Palestine,” said Silver, who lives in San Francisco and studied the Middle East in college. “My professor gave me a list of people to email while I was there and one email resulted in a job.”

“I shadowed a few journalists and I learned that it is the most fantastic way to learn about something,” Silver told around 60 listeners.
