City College softball got the upper hand against American River College March 11 when it won 9-2 in a dominant effort.
In the first inning, the Panthers’ defense was flawless. With one out and one on for American River College, shortstop Mickey Loveridge turned a 6-3 double play to end the inning.
The runs for the Panthers came early. In the bottom of the first, with the bases loaded, Loveridge hit a two-RBI double to put the Panthers on the board first.
The lone mistake from the Panthers’ defense came in the fourth inning. With two outs and runners on third and first, both players began to steal bases. A throw to second would have ended the inning, but after a brief hesitation, the decision was a late throw to home plate.
After the run scored, American River College’s Audrianna Burlew hit an RBI single to tie the game.

After pitching two shutout innings, Kiernan pulled Wantz and put Welch back in the circle to close out the game. Welch and the defense ended the game with a strikeout and a 6-4-3 double play.
Although Welch played more innings, Wantz was credited with the win, bringing her record to 7-1. The win brought the Panthers record to 15-6.
