Late-game struggles continued for the City College men’s basketball team Jan. 14 as the Panthers came up short against the Cosumnes River College Hawks.
The Panthers failed to find rhythm early in the game, allowing the Hawks to get out to a 15-point lead by the midway point of the first half and 18 points by the three-minute mark. Defensive struggles around the basket continued to plague the Panthers as they failed to find an answer for Hawks forward TJ Williams, who scored 11 points in the opening period on his way to a season high 20 points in the game.
“Our zone defense was terrible to start the game,” said Panthers Head Coach Andrew Jones.
The second half started well for the Panthers, who looked poised to make a comeback, when after starting the half down 56-45, they went on an 8-1 run to open the period, narrowing the Hawks’ lead to just 4.
“We scored a lot of points but we gave up too many,” said Jones.
The Hawks’ lead hovered around 5 points for much of the half, as the Panthers kept themselves in the game on the heels of strong play by Panthers guard Antwione Davis and forward Bobby Barnes on the offensive end. But defensive inefficiency ultimately caught up with the Panthers. At about five minutes left, the Hawks began to pull away, widening their lead to 11 by the three-minute mark. The Panthers would never catch up, ending with a 9-point loss at 98-89.

Panthers forward Barnes, who was the high score in the contest with 27, said he saw reason for optimism looking forward as the Panthers looked strong offensively.
“They had a lot of bigger guys and I felt like I was quicker on my feet then them,” said Barnes. “We attacked the rim and put a lot of pressure on their defense but we lost another close one.”
The 98 points scored by the Hawks was the most the Panthers have allowed this season.
Continued defensive woes are a serious concern of Jones, who said after the game, that he believes mental lapses may be causing his team’s poor defensive play. Jones credits the team’s defensive inadequacies to “a lack of concentration in practice, which leads to a lack of concentration in the game.”
