City College’s men’s and women’s track and field teams started their new season Feb. 11, and, after placing sixth last season, the teams are determined to improve according to head women’s coach Lisa Bauduin.
“I want them strive [and] to be better than they were in high school every day,” said Bauduin. The track and field team competed in the Intra Squad Red and Gold meet at Hughes Stadium. The competition was a scrimmage, however, and no points were given.
Bauduin said the team can improve by following four simple rules: “Never change, be healthy, compete well, and have a great experience,” said Baudin. This season, the women’s team features two returning players—Jazmine Alexander and Jasmine Drake.
At the Mt. SAC Relay Cross Country Division, Alexander ran a time of 26.34 seconds in the 200 meter, and at the Nor Cal Championship Trials, she achieved a time of 57.98 seconds in the 400 meter.
Drake threw an 8.8 pound shot put ball 37-feet and 4-inches, setting a record for the 2011 Big 8 Conference Championships. On the men’s team this season, head coach Rob Dewar said he hopes that his team members stay dedicated and sets goals for themselves.
“We were young and immature last year,” said Dewar.
Dewar also said that he does not want to set expectations for his team, because that only puts more pressure on the players and because it may affect how they perform.

Bauduin said the team looks to have a strong core group this season.
“We have a very good nucleus of sprinters, relays and throwers on both the men and women’s teams,” said Bauduin.
Dewar also believes the team looks strong this season. Dewar said Aaron Tombleson is a great thrower. Last season, Tombleson, a sophomore, set a shot put record last season at the Woody Wilson Classic meet, throwing the 16-pound shot put ball 52-feet and 10-inches.
“We are motivated, there’s a lot of humor, and there is a lot of seriousness out on the track,” said Logan Garcia, a 4 X 400 meter runner and 200 meter runner this season. With motivation and determination, chemistry major Mellanie Castillo said she has to stay focused.
“I have been a part of a track and field team since the sixth grade, but in college there is no time to slack off,” said chemistry major Mellanie Castillo, who participates in the 400 meter hurdles, the 4X4 relay and 400 meter run.
The men’s and women’s next track meet is March 7 and 8 at American River College.
