City College has many on campus clubs that get recognition because they are easily accessible.
However, there is a club that works together off campus that many people do not even know exists.
New and still unnamed is a club that goes out every Thursday at 6:30 p.m. to feed the homeless.
Shannon Gibbons, is the president and the only official member of the club. Communications professor Patricia Harris-Jenkins is the listed club adviser because of the club’s newness.
Gibbons has been helping feed the hungry for the past year religiously at Newman Catholic Community located on 5900 Newman Ct., across from Sacramento State University.
“I get a rush helping those who need a little help and those who just need someone to care enough to take the time to notice them,” Gibbons says.
A small group of about four people meet every Thursday to prepare the home-cooked meals in to-go containers for distribution. The food many times is the leftovers from the night before, which activities include a Wednesday night mass, college dinner and activities night.

they need to do their part in their own community, to learn to look past the outer appearance because there are many different reasons people are homeless.
Matt Farmer, a City College student often participates even though he is taking the semester off school.
“Yeah, we do this fast and make sure all of the food is gone to those who need it,” Farmer says. “We drive around looking for people and give them a meal.”
The group often times drives down Howe Avenue looking for those who are in need. On a regular night about 10 families are fed, and each month different themed services are provided, such as Clothing the Naked and Quenching the Thirsty.
Club members want to get the message across to the people they are helping that they are cared about and listened to.
“I love the stories,” Gibbons said. “I enjoy hearing from these people and being able to talk to them.”
Besides taking four classes at City College, and spending various other nights of the week volunteering and being involved at Newman, Gibbons says she is happy with her role and what she does and encourages City students to get involved and make a difference.
