Tempers flare during game between rival CRC
City College baseball’s battle to break .500 on the season is not over. The team’s lost to cross-town rival Cosumnes River College April 14 in a high scoring 12-8 game, the first matchup of the season and first of a three-game series for the two teams.
The Panthers started the game strong and jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the second inning. However, the momentum shifted toward CRC after a second altercation between head coach Tony Bloomfield and the second base umpire about a blown call at first base in the top of the third.
Panthers’ head coach Derek Sullivan declined to comment about the calls or the officiating but stated that the argument may have benefited CRC by rallying the dugout.
“I don’t think it was out of character or out of place,” said Sullivan about Bloomfield’s reaction to the calls. “It was probably how it should’ve gone.”
Cosumnes scored three runs in the inning and cut the lead to 4-3.
Panthers’ first baseman Brandon Langan hit an RBI single in the fifth to put the team up 5-3, but CRC’s momentum wouldn’t falter. Cosumnes rallied back and scored three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 6-5 lead.
The runs for Cosumnes were scored on RBI singles by Nicco Toni and Gabe Abella and on a sacrifice fly to left field by lead off hitter Devin Pettengill. Cosumnes later scored six runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a 12-6 lead.

The Panthers’ starting pitcher Ben Ritchey (6-2) pitched well in the first two innings, but struggled from there on out. The rest of the bullpen was no better, as the five pitchers who took the mound allowed a combined 20 base runners in the game.
“[I] can’t point the finger at anyone guy, obviously, but we did not pitch well enough to win today, and it wasn’t even close,” said Sullivan.
Despite out-hitting CRC 13-10, the Panthers couldn’t get things going in the final innings of the game. They left two runners stranded on base in the seventh, scored two runs in the eighth and left another runner on base in the ninth.
“They really swung the bat well today,” said Sullivan, “but [CRC’s] swinging of the bat was more timely. I don’t think they had as many hits as us — it was close. They just seemed to always cash in on theirs.”
The Panthers (14-17) will look to inch closer to .500 when they take on CRC again April 16 for Game 2 of the three game series at Cosumnes River College.
