Panthers lose to defending state champions

The City College men’s basketball team lost its ninth Big 8 Conference game of the season Feb. 10 to the defending state champions Santa Rosa Junior College Bear Cubs, 76-59.
Much like other games this season, the Panthers kept the game close in the first half — going into the locker room down 39-34 — but couldn’t keep up with the Bear Cubs offensive onslaught in the second.
“We were only good for a half,” said City College head coach Andrew Jones. “We just stopped learning how to make baskets in the second half.”
Through most of the first half, the Panthers traded 3-pointers with the Bear Cubs who are sitting third in the state with 9.9 3-pointers made per game. In the half, City College made five threes and Santa Rosa made eight.
The Panthers managed to keep up with Santa Rosa for the first eight minutes of the second half, but couldn’t seem to get the ball rolling after that. After being ahead 55-49, the Bear Cubs went on a 12-0 run to stretch the lead to 18 points.
“We relied on Brandon Rowden to get all of our points,” said Jones. “He made half of our buckets in the second half.”
Rowden led the Panthers with 17 points and five rebounds, and sophomore forward Adam Ciszewski contributed 11 points.
For Santa Rosa, four players scored in double figures: Devone Oliver (18), Parker Farris (15), Markel Thompson (14) and Corey Hammell (12).
“We’re not going to win if we don’t make shots, that’s for sure,” said Jones. “If we can’t make shots, we have to make sure that we’re defensively focused, and we lost that focus during that stretch.”
The Panthers’ next game Feb. 12 will be their last home game of the season against Diablo Valley College.

Free throws prove costly, Panthers lose to conference rival

After winning two consecutive games for the first time this season, the City College women’s basketball team dropped one Feb. 10 against Big 8 Conference rival Santa Rosa Junior College in a close 59-49 game.
Despite the final score, the game was much closer than it appeared. The Panthers, led by Aleea Reese, were down by three points with a little less than 3 minutes remaining. At the 2:45 mark, Reese fouled out, and the team collapsed, failing to complete their comeback.
“I thought we beat ourselves,” said City College head coach Julia Allender. “We didn’t come ready to play, and [Santa Rosa is] a team that plays off of a lot of energy, and they play very hard.”
The biggest problem for the Panthers was their inability to make free throws. In the first half, City College got to the line often, but missed 10 free throws — shots that proved costly as they went into the locker room down 28-21 at half time.
The teams battled throughout the second half, and the Panthers kept the score within striking distance until the last minutes of the game. The Bear Cubs went on to score under the rim and at the free throw line, and the Panthers provided no answer.
“I thought Reese had a great offensive game for us, but other than that, we weren’t getting much,” said Allender.
The Panthers’ leading scorer on the season guard Rayelle Ross didn’t score her first points until two minutes into the second half. Ross finished the game with five points before fouling out in the last minute. Reese, however, scored more than half of the team’s points in the second half before fouling out and leaving the game with 20 points.
For Santa Rosa, two players scored in double figures: Jenna Dunbar (12) and Taylor Graham (10).
“I thought we got ourselves down, and anytime you get yourself down, it’s a battle to fight back,” said Allender. “We made a lot of mistakes under the six-minute mark where the game has to be played perfect.”
City College’s next game Feb. 12 will be their last home game of the season against Diablo Valley College.
