On a cloudy February afternoon, the Cosmetology Department Building echoed with the buzz of hair clippers and the hissing of compressed steam from flatirons and curlers.
In one corner, cosmetology student Tiffany Bradford performed a manicure on a male student, airbrushing his nails cerulean blue. In another, psychology major Ainslee Clarke beamed radiantly as she stared into a mirror, looking over her new faux-hawk haircut.
All of these students and many others participated in the department’s canned food drive for the Sacramento Food Bank. From Feb. 24-27 cosmetology students provided free haircuts or manicures to anyone who donated canned food.
“The reason for the canned food drive is to give back to the community and make the community aware of our services,” explained cosmetology professor Roxanne Tambert. “It brings a lot of people in who maybe couldn’t afford to get a haircut because of the economy right now. They can come in and get a free service.”
Many cosmetology students were grateful to be working with real people instead of mannequins.

“This is my first semester working with clients,” said cosmetology student Sherita Davis. “It’s a lot better than mannequins. Clients actually talk back and we can have a conversation.”
Not only did the students get firsthand experience, but the Sacramento Food Bank received a lot of donations. According to its Web site, the Sacramento Food Bank provides more than 25,465 meals per day, six days a week. With more individuals facing unemployment and economic woes, there is a higher demand for aid.
“The economy is down and so more and more people are needing assistance and using services like food banks, and so their sources are going to be depleted,” said ESL professor JoAnna Prado “So having something like this to help increase their resources is absolutely a good idea.”
But students shouldn’t wait until another food drive to assist the cosmetology department. Clarke recommends coming in at anytime.
“The students will cut your hair the way you want it, not how they want it and they do haircuts better here than anywhere else,” Clarke said.
