The answer depends on who asks and what the writing is for.

To begin, texting is not a serious form of language, but a quick method of communicating thoughts. Texting only allows a maximum 160 characters, including spaces, so one has to find ways to communicate ideas efficiently.

That’s why texting has shorthand expressions and is best for communicating within a small circle of individuals, not large audiences. With spacing limitations, which would you prefer: phrases crammed together (I’mAlmostThereJustWait) or a logogram (C u latr). Most individuals would pick the latter because the former is confusing.

We have heard our professors say texting affects our writing adversely but studies prove the contrary.

According to renowned linguist David Crystal, analysis shows that only 10 percent of words used in texts are misspelled, and most texts are not sent by teens and young adults: 80 percent are sent by businesses and adults.

Likewise, there is no evidence that texting teaches people to spell badly.

“Research shows that those who text frequently are more likely to be the most literate and the best spellers, because you have to know how to manipulate language,” Crystal says.

Students must maintain a distinction between texting and standard English. That doesn’t signify texting is wrong. However, there are places where it’s appropriate and places where it’s not. Formal writing is not the place for texting language. It’s all a matter of proper usage.

As long as those distinctions can be kept separate: the difference between when texting is appropriate and when standard English is appropriate and necessary, then text messaging is not detrimental to the English language.
