Any City College student currently enrolled in at least 6 units is eligible to apply for 186 scholarships by March 1.

The Office of Philanthropy at City College is offering school-wide student scholarships for those who would like to apply. You must have completed 6 or more units at City College and be enrolled in 6 units for the spring 2019 semester. There are a total of 186 scholarships available to City College students.

These scholarships are limited to City College students as each college in the Los Rios Community College District has its own requirements, according to Rachel Larsen, City College development officer.

The scholarship system uses Automatch, a tool new to Los Rios, to help students choose the scholarship formatted to their personal qualifications.

“It used to be you had to comb through the list and pick up to ten, but now it auto matches you to everything you are qualified for which could be up to 50, 60, 70 scholarships,” said Larsen.

Although a notification about the new way to apply for scholarships appeared on the main page of student’s Canvas home screen, some students haven’t taken advantage of it yet. “A student gets to the application, they fill out the yes or no type of questions and there will be four essay questions,” said McCarty. “These essay questions are very important, this is what the reader will mostly go off of.”

City College staff and faculty members will be reviewing students’ applications.

“At the end of the road we have teams of actual live reviewers, the Honors and Awards Committee, so live bodies are still looking at everyone’s application,” said Larsen.

According to City College Office of Philanthropy Scholarships, there is no limit to how many scholarships one can apply for as well as no limit for how many are awarded to each student. International and undocumented students are eligible to apply for these scholarships as well.

Students will be notified of the results of their scholarship application in May, according to SCC Office of Philanthropy Scholarships. If awarded a scholarship, students will be required to click on a link within their email asking them to officially “accept” their award. Applications will not be accepted late and must be submitted by midnight on March 1.

“The odds of winning a scholarship at City College through this system are a million times better than buying a lottery ticket,” said McCarty.
