How student data helps the campus

Number crunching and data analyzing aren’t endeavors confined strictly to the classroom at City College. In fact, these activities have great influence on the administration of courses and programs offered on campus.

Although relatively unknown to the student body, the Planning, Research, and Institutional Effectiveness Office plays a prominent role in collecting and examining important student data.

Dean Marybeth Buechner and analyst Anne Danenberg have recently joined the PRIE Office. According to Danenberg, the research performed by the department is necessary for the college to be accredited and is also important for various nationwide surveys.

The information is also used to plan what programs and courses City College may add in the future and what improvements need to be made on campus.

“It probably doesn’t do a lot for any individual students,” Danenberg said. “However, it does a lot for groups of students.”

Currently, the PRIE Office is working with the people who design course schedules to help make the lives of the students easier. This is just one example of the many things the PRIE Office does on campus.

Danenberg is no stranger to research. She started down her career path in 1996 during graduate school and has primarily been doing K-12 research. She was also an instructor of sociology at Diablo Valley College in the Bay Area, which she claims gave her a unique perspective on the research she does.

“The community colleges are really near and dear to my heart because they are part of my own story,” Danenberg said.

Buechner also has a strong history in research and comes well-equipped for her new position. She has a B.A. in both biology and psychology from Ball State University, and a Ph.D. in animal behavior from UC Davis. As dean of the PRIE Office, Buechner leads the department faculty in trying to collect all of the information.

“The folks in the office crunch the numbers,” Buechner said. “My job is more to coordinate the projects and communicate the results.”

The position of dean doesn’t come without extensive prior knowledge of the Los Rios district.
Buechner has spent the last 17 years at Cosumnes River College, where she performed various duties in addition to instructing. She was faculty leader for both the Center for the Advancement of Staff and the Student Learning program.

Although the role of dean might require some big shoes to be filled, Buechner claims she’s ready for action.

“I’ve always been one of those people who looks for new challenges,” Buechner said.
