It’s time to get back into the swing of women’s golf.
Five talented sophomores return to City College for yet another competitive season of women’s golf: Hunter Hoag of John F. Kennedy High School, Hannah Peters (Rio Americano), Hannah Reynoso (West Campus), Jayla Pons (Elk Grove) and Ciera Hoag (Kennedy), an all-league selection from last season.
Michael Thomas, the women’s golf coach at City College, is excited to start his third season helping these young women compete and improve their game. Thomas has a lot to offer from his experience coaching the women’s golf team at American River College from 2005–2009 and the men’s golf team at ARC from 2009 to present. Thomas also teaches an off-season conditioning class.
“Golf is a team sport, and you have to individually navigate yourself around the golf course,” said Thomas. “Some have a better short game while some girls hit it farther than others.”
The 2016 women’s golf team placed fourth out of nine teams in the Big 8 Conference. They are projected to place third out of 10 teams this year, according to Thomas.
“We have three girls that are pretty close to par,” said Thomas. “And other girls might have a handicap.”
The season kicked off with the Modesto tournament, which was held at the Tracy Golf and Country Club Tuesday, Aug. 29, followed by a trip to Redwood City for a tournament Thursday, Aug. 31.
