City College reached out to students affected by the ITT Technical Institute when it closed it’s doors Sept. 6 and left more than 35,000 students nationwide academically stranded.
Courtney Heidelberg, City College’s outreach specialist, said outreach to 300 ITT students in the Sacramento area who were affected students in Sacramento began when the Bureau of Private Postsecondary Education contacted outreach specialists from Los Rios, CSUS, and UC Davis to meet at their offices in Sacramento for next steps.
The BPPE provides oversight of private colleges in California and told students affected by the closure they have 120 days to transfer credits to a comparable program.
“It’s very difficult to attend a for-profit college because of the cost,” Heidelberg said. “When the campus loses the ability to provide federal financial aid, it makes it really difficult for those students to attend.”

Within the 120 -day deadline, students will need to apply for a school loan discharge or transfer their credits to a comparable program. The discharge is a 100 percent forgiveness of current loans with a reimbursement for previous amounts already paid, according to emails sent to students by the Department of Education.The students were provided materials to help enroll at Los Rios, as well as information on what programs had equivalents at the community colleges.
Leonela Lepe, City College counselor, said for-profit colleges are still a viable choice for current students to transfer too.
“I would guide them to do their research and understand the type of college and to research to see if it’s accredited,” Lepe said.
City College provides equivalents for the administration of justice, software development, business management, and accounting programs.
