Panthers get 4th straight victory, 7th of season
The Panthers allowed no runs in their 1-0 victory against the Santa Rosa Junior College Bear Cubs Feb. 26 in a Big 8 Conference preseason matchup.
In a game not short on effort, both teams struggled to get runs scored. The first three innings went scoreless, but the turning point came in the fourth inning for the Panthers. Kyle Blakeman scored the lone run of the game after Boston Romero doubled down the right field line.
“It’s just another game, but every win is big,” said City College head coach Derek Sullivan. “When you are talking about a program that is attempting to put ourselves in position to win a state championship every year, you got to win close games, you got to beat good opponents, and Santa Rosa is always good.”
After pitching 4 2/3 shut out innings, sophomore Zach Smart was pulled for left-handed pitcher Travis Magness, which proved to be a great change by Sullivan.
“Rarely do we have a set game plan,” said Sullivan. “We made the move that we thought gave us the best chance to win and take advantage of some match ups with the left hander pitcher coming out of the bullpen.”

Magness sped the game up at the top of the sixth and seventh innings with two quick three and outs before being pulled for closing pitcher Gabriel Meza in the eighth inning. In 1 1/3 innings, Meza faced five batters and allowed only one hit.
“He’s our closer, that’s the role he’s played himself into at this point, and it was a one run game,” said Sullivan. “It was close enough to the end of the game that we can expect him to finish it, and he did just that.
