City College women’s basketball rallies; wins in overtime
In the first home game of the season, City College women’s basketball team mounted a successful comeback victory in overtime over the Butte College Roadrunners 74-61, erasing a 12-point second-half deficit.
The Roadrunners were ahead by 12 points and looked to run away with the victory with 11 minutes remaining in the game. With clutch play on both sides of the court, the Panthers rallied back and forced overtime.
“They got some stops, played some better defense, got some boards and played a little tougher,” said Panthers head coach Julia Allender. “I just think we got more aggressive offensively.”
The Panthers played timidly in the first half and turned the ball over several times — 20 total turnovers in the game. The shots didn’t fall often enough, which brought the energy down, according to Allender.
With some big stops in the second half, the Panthers knocked the lead down to five with five minutes remaining in regulation. City College took advantage of the overly aggressive play by the Roadrunners and found themselves at the free-throw line often — shooting 24 free in the game.
