As college students, we have so much stuff on our plates. Some of us may be juggling 12 or more units, working part time and have family responsibilities.
The question we may ask ourselves is, “How can I manage my time effectively this semester and not get overwhelmed?”
That is a question I ask myself all the time, especially since I am taking 17 units this semester and helping to raise my 1-year-old twin nephews with my family. There are times when I do feel overwhelmed and wonder how I will get through this semester successfully.
But I just hang in there because I have made it this far in my college career with good grades and am getting closer and closer to graduating from City College in the spring of 2015. I have every reason to hang tight and keep the faith knowing that I will be given the strength I need to succeed.
It does get hard sometimes keeping a busy schedule, but that is when time management becomes essential for our success as college students.
In order to get a handle on everything we need to do from schoolwork to family obligations, we must take time to prioritize our schedule, which means setting some time during the day or evening, for example, to study for that history midterm coming up the following week without procrastinating.
Just last month, I had midterms coming up, and I needed to set some time to study without getting distracted at home, so I spent some time on campus in the library after one of my classes, studying for my midterms. Because I set a designated place and time to study, I benefited greatly by getting A’s and B’s on my midterms.
My No. 1 goal, just like any other college student, is to graduate, and that takes a lot of hard work and determination to get there. But the amount of time, effort and commitment is all worth it to get to the day where I will walk across that stage to accept my degree.

For college students who are struggling in their classes and are wondering if they will ever finish school, my advice is not to give up. You will succeed. Stay focused on your goal and keep pressing forward even when it gets tough.
As a student you have the ability to achieve anything you set your mind to, so do not let yourself think that you can’t achieve your goal. You can!
In the end, it becomes a real accomplishment knowing that all of the hard work and persistence in college brought you to that moment—graduation day.
I imagine myself walking across that stage smiling as I receive my associate’s degree in front of a crowd of people, among them my family and friends with proud looks on their faces. Thinking about starting as a City College student and the hard work, frustration and challenges I faced to get to where I am now, I see how important that journey was for me.
And as I receive my diploma, I know I’ll continue my journey as a student as I step into my next goal—earning my bachelor’s degree at Sac State.
