The deadline for applicants hoping to speak at graduation is March 23.
According to Christopher Torres, Student Affairs specialist, the deadline may be moved back if too few applications are received. To qualify students must have graduated in either fall 2011 or be set to graduate this semester. Applicants must also have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Students who wish to apply can pick up an application in the Student Center room 226.
Torres has been part of the commencement speaker committee since 2005. This committee also consists of a student employee and anywhere from three to six professors, depending on availability, Torres said.
The group is put together to judge student candidates for the chance to speak at graduation for the fall 2011 and spring 2012 semesters.
“We’re looking for individuals that are able to address in a large crowd, a variety of an audience—from faculty, administration, staff [and] the public,” said Torres.
According to Torres, every year applications come from across the board. Anything from pinnacle-level communication skills to a student with minimal skills, generally an equal amount of males and females, and students with all different types of majors audition to speak.
