‘The Thing’ is lacking something

“The Thing” was released on Oct. 14 and is a prequel to a film that John Carpenter directed back in 1982. Though this movie does a great job in filling in some of the gaps that the original had left open, the rest of the film falls flat.

The story takes place in 1982. A Norwegian team, which consists of a few Americans, is on an expedition in the Arctic to uncover an alien space ship that has crash-landed. During the search of the ship the team comes across “the thing,” and once they do, that’s when the trouble starts.

The creature they find not only eats and digests its victims, but it also is able to make exact replicas of its victims, and blends into the rest of the camp in an attempt to trick more people, which continues on throughout the movie in various ways.

The one thing this film does fairly well is answer some of the mysteries that happened to the Norwegian team. In the original film R.J. Mcready, played by Kurt Russell stumbles across the burnt remains of an unidentified creature but gives it no other information. In this film it shows exactly how the creature came to be, how it got burnt and other details, such as, the fire axe that was impaled into the door. Viewers get a better idea of what really transpired and are not left so in the dark.

The two main leads in the movie are played by Mary-Elizabeth Winsted and Joe Edgerton, who give solid performances, but the good qualities are outweighed by the bad overall.

The biggest problem that this movie suffers from is the over use of computer generated graphics, which completely ruined what the creature looked like. The biggest thing that made the original work so great was the use of FX which is using make-up and props that use animatronics. Though limited by the technology of 1982 the effects still come through after 29 years, these effects make the creature so frightening and appealing.

The current film’s creature isn’t very believable, and the filmmakers relied on jump scares, rather than actually trying to build suspense and work their way to the frights.

This movie lacked original and fresh ideas, which really hindered it from being good and from being a prequel that was supposed to have a fresh spin on the franchise. It failed miserably.

For true fans, save your money and wait for it to come out on video.
