Say goodbye to sun-kissed skin and tank tops, and hello to military-inspired blazers, cozy capes, and lacy leggings and embrace the chic and sophisticated world of fall fashion, according to the style editors at Harper’s Bazaar and City College students.
“I love fall fashion,” says Sarah Sandoval, an undeclared major at City College. “You have way more options and garments to choose from in comparison to summer’s selection.”
As far as her own wardrobe, Sandoval shops at Forever 21 because, she says, they have “ridiculous” sales and a huge selection of colors and trendy clothing.
“Besides trench coats, I’m particularly looking forward to seeing peek-toe boots because they let you know that it’s starting to cool off outside, yet it’s still OK to show off your pedicured toes,” Sandoval says.
Fall 2010 fashion oozes lush textures like velvet and lace in decadent hues of blackberry and wine.
“Fall fashion is definitely changing,” says Sergio Reyes, a fashion design major at City College. “Fall fashion colors can be blood red and silver, it’s not always orange and brown.”

“Anything can be [considered] “hot” if worn correctly,” Reyes says. “I have a feeling that knee pads and denim leg warmers will suddenly be cool.”
Reyes’ advice to students contemplating a style for fall is to browse the fashion blogs. Or, if you see a trend you like on campus, don’t be afraid to go out and buy a garment like it. Make it your own, and work it.
“For fall, there has always been black [dark colors],” says Saul Ramirez, a City College fashion major who is also designing his own line. “I’ve created a collection with dark solid colors, but what will be seen for fall are intense colors like lipstick red, yellow, purple, espresso brown, grey and silver.
“The trends are also definitely different this year. The past trends were conservative, but now they’re more uncovered and there [are] extra garments to show in one outfit,” Ramirez says.
“My particular line is mostly high-end garments. I love working with faux fur, taffeta and polyesters,” he adds. “For women I like putting them in short dresses that will be worn with tights or leggings, and for men, jackets and more sophisticated vests are recommended.”
While clothing is an essential component to a civilized society, fashion is not just about practicality but is also a means of self expression, according to Ramirez.
“Everyone has their own style. However, as a designer I would advise to wear more jackets, coats, gloves, long gloves more tights, but my strongest advice is wear what makes you feel comfortable.”
