Nearly 2000 nurses and union members marched Thursday, Aug. 26, on the California State Capitol as part of a California Nurses Association staged protest of the Republican gubernatorial candidate in commemoration of the right to vote for women.
The CNA planned protest of Meg Whitman took place on the 90th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which introduced women’s suffrage.
“Meg Whitman has not cared enough to vote,” said organizer and registered nurse Malinda Markowitz. “We do care. Let us send a message to Whitman and all her corporate backers and Wall Street that we will continue to fight for the values of the suffragettes, and the values of nurses and all working people today. That is our message today.”
The march began at the Sacramento Convention Center and moved slowly through downtown, emptying out on the West Steps of the Capitol, where men and women dressed in 1920s themed garb handed out faux-newspapers called “The California Voter” while shouting, “Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Meg Whitman hasn’t voted for 28 years!”
The shouts and cheers of nurses and union workers rang through the open area, bedecked with a huge tent over thousands of chairs. The speakers all stepped up to the podium, each armed with a quote from a famous suffragette.
The ceremonies also featured a skit depicting a regal Whitman, tiara included, making anti-working class remarks with her two suit-clad friends: Mr. Goldman and Mr. Sachs. The figures, taking their name from controversial investment corporation Goldman Sachs, were meant to portray the rampant culture of corporate corruption. Elizabeth Perkins-Sahlin, the great-great-great-granddaughter of Elizabeth Cady-Stanton, first president of the National Women’s Suffrage Association, also made an address.

The presentations were punctuated by fiery words from workers of all walks. A ferocious speech from the president of the California Teacher’s Association, David Sanchez, illustrated the frustrations of teachers and many other union employees.
“We want a governor who understands what’s best for the people of California and the future of the state — the children of the state,” Sanchez said. “We want a governor who will work for the people and with the people, and, Meg Whitman, that’s not you.”
