City College, along with other Los Rios colleges, plans to have its athletic teams participate in late spring sports this year, Athletic Director Mitch Campbell announced.
The decision to bring back competition depends upon Sacramento County moving to the less restrictive red tier of the statewide opening blueprint, according to a Feb. 24 update on the Panther website.
Returning sports will include baseball, softball, men’s swimming, women’s swimming, women’s tennis, and track and field for men and women, according to the update. There is no specific date for resuming sports teams.
“Each coach will work with their student athletes to provide more detailed information about possible schedules for resuming activities, testing requirements, and safety protocols as we get closer to possible start dates,” Campbell said in the update.

Late spring sports are the traditional spring sports that were delayed statewide due to COVID-19 health concerns. No out of district travel will be allowed. Activities can include conditioning classes, team practices and some limited competition with teams from other Los Rios colleges.
The red tier category means that four to seven new daily cases of COVID-19 have been reported per 100,000 residents or that 5–8% of the county’s population tests positive for the disease, according to the state’s pandemic website.
All other athletics teams and programs can also resume outdoor team practices and activities once Sacramento County reaches the red tier, Campbell said in the announcement, stressing that all participants will have to abide by safety protocols and undergo COVID testing.
