The City College softball team has won three consecutive games, including seven of its last ten. With the postseason on the horizon, the Panthers will be looking to improve its seeding and win the Big 8 Conference title outright or at least share it with San Joaquin Delta.

The Panthers (28-2, 18-2 in the Big 8) visited the Folsom Lake (10-26, 4-16) April 16, defeating the Falcons 8-0, completing the season sweep in the series as well.

Sophomore pitcher Danielle Reyes also threw her first career no-hitter as she pitched six innings, walked three, and struck out 11 batters. Reyes currently leads the Big 8 in strikeouts with 133; she’s also currently second in both ERA (1.77) and wins with 14.

“I didn’t think about it until the fifth inning,” said Kiernan on Reyes no-hitter. “I wanted to preserve that and I didn’t want to out anyone else in,” he said.

City College followed up by winning their next two games in a series sweep versus Sierra College (30-9, 14-6). The series sweep gave the Panthers the edge in the season series, taking two out of three against the Wolverines.

The City College softball team defeated Delta College 6-1 April 9, taking the season series 2-1, extending the Panthers’ winning streak to nine games and moving the Panthers into first place in the Big 8 conference.    

The San Joaquin Delta Mustangs were 13-2 when they met the City College Panthers (15-2) for the final time this season.

City College scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning for an early lead. An error by Delta’s infielder Mikaela Ferreira allowed Shelby Lloyd to reach first base. Morgan Conner followed with a single down the left field line. Designated hitter Elizabeth Caffero singled into the right-center field; Lloyd scored for a 1-0 lead.

“We played as a team today,” said Caffero. “We played for each other. We needed a win.”

Catcher Jordyn Farren continued the momentum for the Panthers in the bottom of the first inning. A home run over the left field fence scored Caffero and increased the Panthers’ lead to 3-0.  

Freshman pitcher Rachel Gordon and the City College defense shut down Delta’s offense throughout the game. Gordon gave up four hits and struck out five batters as she pitched a complete game for the Panthers. Gordon is now 4-0 and fourth in the Big 8 with a 1.66 ERA.   

Delta’s defense was plagued by infield errors throughout the game as they committed four.  

“I didn’t see what I usually see out of Delta,” said Panthers’ outfielder Mackenzie Duval. “They didn’t come out as strong as they are.”  

The Mustangs found some momentum in the sixth inning when Ferreira hit a ground ball to shortstop and beat the throw to first base. Outfielder Shayann Trent bunted down the first base line for a single and advanced Ferreira to third base. A sacrifice fly and RBI by infielder Tawny Deerinck put the Mustangs on the board as they trailed 3-1.    

The Panthers returned to bat in the bottom of the sixth with a single by Karmyn Rivera. A sacrifice bunt by Duval advanced Rivera to second base. Lloyd singled to right field putting runners on the corners. Caffero was intentionally walked to load the bases. Farren singled to right field driving in two more runs for City College. Rylee Retzer’s hit to right field would score the Panthers’ sixth and final run.

“I feel very excited that we beat them two out of three in the series,” said Duval. “And now we’re going to play the big San Mateo.”  

The San Mateo Bulldogs are first in the Coast-North Conference and have a 24-game winning streak.
